Playstation 2 component incites African war (?)

An interesting article i stumbled on Yahoo!...

By Ben Silverman

Has the video game industry dug up its very own blood diamond?

According to a report by activist site Toward Freedom, for the past decade the search for a rare metal necessary in the manufacturing of Sony's Playstation 2 game console has fueled a brutal conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the center of the conflict is the unrefined metallic ore, coltan. After processing, coltan turns into a powder called tantalum, which is used extensively in a wealth of western electronic devices including cell phones, computers and, of course, game consoles.

Allegedly, the demand for coltan prompted Rwandan military groups and western mining companies to plunder hundreds of millions of dollars worth of the rare metal, often by forcing prisoners-of-war and even children to work in the country's coltan mines.

"Kids in Congo were being sent down mines to die so that kids in Europe and America could kill imaginary aliens in their living rooms," said Ex-British Parliament Member Oona King.

So where's the connection to Sony? According to Toward Freedom, during the 2000 launch of the PS2, the electronics giant was having trouble meeting consumer demand. To pump out more units, Sony required a significant increase in the production of electric capacitors, which are primarily made with tantalum. This helped drive the world price of the powder from $49/pound to a whopping $275/pound, resulting in the frenzied scouring of the Congolese hills known for being ripe with coltan.

Sony has since sworn off using tantalum acquired from the Congo, claiming that current builds of the PS2, PSP and PS3 consoles are sourced from a variety of mines in several different countries.

But according to researcher David Barouski, they're hardly off the hook.

"SONY's PlayStation 2 launch...was a big part of the huge increase in demand for coltan that began in early 1999," he explained. "SONY and other companies like it, have the benefit of plausible deniability, because the coltan ore trades hands so many times from when it is mined to when SONY gets a processed product, that a company often has no idea where the original coltan ore came from, and frankly don't care to know. But statistical analysis shows it to be nearly inconceivable that SONY made all its PlayStations without using Congolese coltan."

Currently, the Playstation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all-time, having sold through over 140 million units.

Oil Price Hike

As we, football lovers waiting for the Euro to start, our Government gave a nationwide shock. A sudden oil price hike from 1.92 to 2.70. Haha. Bagus. Another brilliant move. Well, we all know that price for crude oil already increased to a whopping usd100++, and the subsidy are better used for another purpose that will 'benefit' the people. Ceh!

But why the sudden move? And why the flip flop decision of banning the foreign car from purchasing local petrol & diesel. This price hike might resorted people to opt the public transportation but look at our public transportation quality. Pity. Then, I read that public transportation companies are warned not to increase their charges, but with the whopping increment of petrol & diesel how can the company barely survive. The are running a business not a Pusat Kebajikan Masyarakat. I am not writing to blame anyone, but better to take brilliant measures with the 'people' in focus.

Talking about the world crude oil price. Few weeks ago, I read a newspaper column that discuss about crude oil price. Early 2008, Bush made a visit to the Arabic nation, mainly to discuss how to control the increasing oil price & put a ceilling price for it. But then, OPEC refused to succumb to the US president. After that OPEC (mostly Islamic country) celebrate the victory, that they will not fall to US pressure & request. Ceh. Is it really a winning situation? The excuse they gave, a sudden increase of oil consumption mainly from Asia (China, India). Without any big increase in cost operation, the oil supply country must be making big profit. But for Malaysia, our oil will be running out on 2014. Less than 10 years. Our country have been depending on Petronas heavily (subsidy, etc.), but then what will happen after 2014? Have we prepared for the outcome? Are the government prepared? Have Petronas study thoroughly their business? Ahh...let them to decide.

Back to reality. Euro already start. Spain, Portugal & Holland have shown what they are capable of. Especially Holland. For me, just get back. Went to a wedding reception in Segamat. Spend a nice weekend in Malacca with my wife. Now sat in front of the idiot box cheering for Spain.

End.

You''ll never walk alone.

EPL already end. No need to announce the winner.

Few weeks back I went out looking for my wife new hand phone. We went from shop to shop until she finally decide to buy a Sony Ericcsons phone. But then, the final obstacle for me was, waiting for her to decide whether to buy the black color or red one. So I said, "Ambik warna merah la. Berani. Bold. Macam Liverpool." Then she said with simple yet harmful reply,"Liverpool kan sekarang kat 4th place."

Somehow I forget that she used to support Man U.

Prepare for Euro pulak!

"Life" Pilot: Merit Badge

Anger ruins joy, steals the goodness of my mind, forces my mouth to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, leads to a mind without regrets. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone. ~Charlie Crews~
